If it is intended as a functional object, does it comfortably do what it is supposed to? The best glassware, for example, is beautiful to look at, but it also can be used easily - either as a pitcher, a vase, a drinking glass, or other such object. Examine your collection closely, using a magnifying glass and strong light if necessary.

Despite claiming some “expertise” after years in the auction industry, I still come across pieces Ive never seen before that have that unexplainable magicand Im usually proven right when they go under the hammer. A classic glass figure by Lalique that couldnt be more Art Deco if it tried! Its all in the name. Who knows?

While the instrument itself was delightfully historic, the provenance was more fiction than footnote. Fully functional, gleaming with nostalgia, and stamped with the iconic Have a Coke slogan, it was a fizzy little slice of Americana. All told, a sale with brass, sass, and just the right amount of sugar.
