I'm thrilled to welcome Patrick McIntyre to Artifactual History Appraisal as Lead Appraiser and Head of our New York and Philadelphia Offices! Patrick's expertise spans a variety of sectors of the art market and appraisal practice. In addition to appraising, he will focus on bringing in new business, appraisal review, and expanding the scope of services offered by the firm.
It was a delightful experience interviewing Makeba Boateng, APR of Boaten Appraisal Service about appraising African fashion on The Art Elevator Podcast! Larissa Wild and I are excited to share her radiant personality and deep expertise and passion for African fashion with you all! I especially enjoyed Makeba's comments about sustainability in African fashion, which helped shift my thinking about how I can be more sustainable in my choices going forward.
Photograph of me by Kaz Sasahara for the Washington Design Center This month I had the pleasure of attending the Washington Design Center's Holiday Fte in support of my dear friend Samara Goodman , head of Samara Interiors LLC. Samara created a beautiful holiday design installation in the DC showroom of STARK Carpet cleverly incorporating the Holiday Fte theme of "Parisian Holiday.
I'm still pinching myself to believe that my wonderful experience at the Appraisers Association of America annual conference in New York City last week actually happened! I'm incredibly grateful to have received the Regional Award and join my distinguished fellow awardees Jay Grimm, Alasdair Nichol (I'm reposting this photo kindly originally shared by Alasdair), Jessica Eisenthal, and Mary Pontillo.
I am deeply honored to receive the Regional Award from the Appraisers Association and am so grateful for this recognition. Joining the Appraisers Association and receiving their expert training impacted my life and career in a profoundly positive way. I started their educational program in 2012 while working as an auction house specialist after a colleague who'd completed their training recommended I invest in myself & my career by enrolling in their classes (thank you, Sam!

We were so honored to have Tanzy Ward return for a second appearance on The Art Elevator podcast ! In this new episode, Tanzy discusses: -The inspiration and process of writing her second book "Unsung Portraits: Anonymous Images of Black Victorians and Early 20th Century Ancestors" -Her scholarship and how she actively engages with artifacts of self-representation in portraits, in fashion, and in jewelry to illuminate and give voice back to individuals who haven't always been included in histori

I'm overjoyed to share a new exhibition of midcentury modern design featuring 35 significant objects curated by my dear friends and colleagues Alexander and Vanessa Wendl of Toad Atelier from their extensive and important collection of midcentury modern design. The exhibition is presented by Larissa Wild Fine Art , the art gallery of my fabulous dear friend and collaborator Larissa Wild and can be viewed online worldwide for maximum educational impact.
I frequently see references to the concept of purchasing art as an investment or as a means of diversifying one's investment portfolio, a vision that is reinforced in the popular imagination with strategically edited clips of Antiques Roadshow where lucky people find out their yard sale item is worth thousands of dollars. Sometimes that happens. I'm certainly not going to claim it doesn't--I've personally held a client's amazing art pottery find worth several thousand dollars that was encountere
Recently I had the pleasure of writing an article that was published on the International Society of Appraisers website. Titled "What is USPAP and Why Is It Important to Hire a USPAP-Compliant Appraiser?" the article provides an overview about the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and explains how USPAP serves to protect the interests of appraisal clients.
Natural disasters have devastated the United States recently, from Harvey and Irma to the fires in the Pacific Northwest. The impacts of climate change make it very likely that similar events will occur in the future, and for those of us fortunate enough to have escaped the wrath of the recent crises, now is an excellent time to assess our own situations and develop a plan for how to react if our homes are threatened in the future.
This is a brief snippet of a much longer monologue that runs continually in my head as I work professionally in the world of things and help guide people through the process of dealing with material objects. I'm writing this on Black Friday, which here in the United States has become a cultural celebration of consumerism that has eclipsed Thanksgiving.
I'm thrilled to feature a guest post today written by my friend Karla Holley of the blog City Limit Style. The internet is a lonely place at times but it can also lead to some wonderful moments of connection. A set of mid-century modern chairs (walnut Krueger Matrix chairs to be exact) first brought Karla and I together when she reached out to me as a mid-century modern design specialist, and in the time since that first contact, I'm proud to consider Karla a friend and very grateful she has cho
Recently I had the pleasure of appearing on "The Probate Nation," an educational television program created and produced by Richard Ruddy, Jr. of the Ruddy Law Firm. My segment about personal property appraising and how appraisers can assist lawyers and their clients will air in the future, but I wanted to share about the show now as it is a fantastic resource.
I’m very pleased to introduce Worthwhile Magazine™ , an online magazine about appraising and the art and antique fields that I co-founded last year with my friend and fellow appraisal colleague Courtney Ahlstrom Christy, ISA CAPP, of Ahlstrom Appraisals in the Atlanta, Georgia region. Courtney and I serve as the Co-Editors of Worthwhile Magazine™. Our mission statement is: “Worthwhile Magazine™ is an online repository of personal property appraisal knowledge accessible to the general public and
Recently I wrote an article for Worthwhile Magazine™ titled “A Consumer’s Guide to Insurance Appraisal Reports: Do You Need One and How to Get One?” I’ve included a short excerpt below and the entire article can be read online here ( [link] ) “Many people are familiar with the concept of insurance coverage in the context of car insurance or travel insurance, but knowledge about insurance coverage of personal property such as fine art or antiques is much less widespread.
My latest article for Worthwhile Magazine™ tackles a tricky area of appraising: understanding the different levels of value. This is one of the most confusing elements of appraising that I spend a lot of time discussing with clients, so I wanted to cover the subject in an article that could reach and help a much broader audience. The following is my article or you can also read it online at Worthwhile Magazine™: “One of the most challenging things to wrap my head around during my formal training
My latest article for Worthwhile Magazine™ is a series of questions to consider asking yourself while contemplating a new addition to your art collection. Often I’m on the scene as an appraiser only after a purchase has been made, so the following group of prompts is based on lessons clients have shared with me about what informs their buying process, or what they wish had!
Written by Elizabeth Stewart, PhD, AAA and John Flandrick This article was originally published in Worthwhile Magazine™ and has been republished here with the permission of the authors. A Note from the Co-Editor: As an appraiser, I frequently invite new clients to send me pictures of their items so I can review them in advance and better assist with designing an appraisal scope of work that is most appropriate to their needs.
Last night I was a panelist on a program for the Washington DC Metro Chapter of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) , which I am part of as a Business Partner Member. My presentation focused on fine art and my goal was to educate and help the professional organizers in the NAPO membership feel more confident about identifying and recognizing potentially important art in future client homes so they could protect and represent their clients’ best interests.
My latest article for Worthwhile Magazine™ shares my personal thoughts in support of mixing antiques in modern interiors. My article is republished below or you can also read it online at Worthwhile Magazine™ : “This is an opinion piece, and a manifesto of sorts, born out of my personal thoughts working in the appraisal field about the widespread confusion and discomfort about how to mix antiques and art in contemporary homes.
Recently I was honored when Anna Novak, CEO of Home Transition Pros , invited me to contribute an article to the Home Transition Pros blog. Home Transition Pros is a full-service team of transition specialists helping individuals and families downsize and move into a new space. This process often prompts questions about the art and antiques in a home, and my article focused on “How to Obtain Quality Art & Antique Appraisals” to help guide readers who find themselves in need of an appraisal.
I'm excited to share a project I've dreamed of accomplishing for a long time: the first in a series of self-paced online courses designed to help people identify their antique and art objects and feel empowered about moving forward making informed decisions about the best choices in their specific situations. "SILVER 101: Quickly Learn How to Identify Your Sterling Silver and Silverplate to Find the Valuable Items and Sort with Empowered Confidence" encapsulates the process I've developed workin
Recently I had the pleasure of being invited to contribute an article to Artwork Archive. Elysian Koglmeier is the Head of Growth for Artwork Archive, an innovative company providing artists, collectors, and organizations with powerful tools for managing their artwork, career, or collection. Artwork Archive also regularly publishes educational articles contributed by a wide range of experts across the arts field.
The Blue Marble by the crew of Apollo 17 (1972), Public Domain image I started writing this article the Friday before the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued their report updating previous projections about the speed and impact of climate change. Returning to the office on Monday and reading the dire news fuels my desire to express my personal opinion about NFTs (which stands for non-fungible tokens), even though I fear many will disagree with me.
At the end of last year I published my first book Ray Eames in 1930s New York. This book is based on my own original research I began in 2001 of Ray's manuscript collection that she donated to the Library of Congress and the culmination of many years of my study and scholarship exploring Ray's life and inspirations. In this book I intentionally focused on Ray's decade of sophisticated artistic training and immersion in the avant-garde culture of New York in the 1930s, prior to meeting Charles Ea
Sarah Reeder of Artifactual History Appraisal was recently named a top renovation and design expert by Redfin. Check out the article we were featured in: 16 Living Room Remodel Tips to Design Your Perfect Space. Special thanks to Redfin writer Jamie Forbes for being such a pleasure to work with!
After I was shocked last week to see a major arts journal publish an article endorsing continued attacks on artworks, my resulting thoughts coalesced in the form of a heartfelt letter to the climate activists contemplating future attacks. Dear Climate Activists, First I will start with the positive. I respect your concern for the environment and I also care deeply about the threat of climate change.
